Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

2018 NSW Premier's Reading Challenge

Students are encouraged to take part in The NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2018.

The SHPS library staff continues to promote the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) as a great way to extend children's reading skills and expose them to a ‘smorgasbord' of classic writing for children.

PRC titles in the K-2 (marked with a Pink Star) section of the PRC are located separately in the school library for ease of selection. At Summer Hill PS, PRC books in the Y3-4 section of the challenge are marked with a Yellow Star, while books in the Y5-6 section are marked with a Green Star. Y3-6 students participating in the PRC are able to self-select items of interest to them from the library catalogue.

All titles read aloud to Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two students during library lessons in Terms One and Two will be automatically added to K, Y1 or Y2 students' PRC records online.

Once read, each PRC title should be recorded into the student's reading record online at:

www.schools.nsw.edu.au/premiersreadingchallenge

*the website will not be accepting entries until the Challenge commences on 5th March, hence keen students will need to document their reading on paper until then. The challenge closes in August so there is plenty of time to start reading.

Children can log on to the PRC website using the same username and password they use to access the Kidspace Portal.

*Please note that the library computer system does not record your child's loan history

National Science Week 2017

SCHOOL THEME: FUTURE EARTH

During library visits this term, along with exploring the Australian Children's Book Week titles, we are focusing on the ways we manage water. We are using three books to explore the theme with senior classes (One well: the story of water on Earth (Rochelle Strauss) - about water generally, Refugees (David Miller) and Circle (Jeannie Baker) - both of which deal with the importance of wetlands and birds).

The Science Week (Week 5) theme of Future Earth is our focus, along with World Water Week (Week 7). Visiting speakers in Week 5 include an hydraulic engineer and an environmental scientist who specialises in wetlands. As well as promoting careers in science, their visits are part of ongoing investigative work around how we manage water in our school grounds and what actions students can take as eco citizens. It is linked to an IWC grant which provided opportunities for student representatives to consult with an environmental engineer about how best to utilise water sensitive design principles in our school grounds.

Around the school, Science Week activities will take place with a focus on peer-to-peer interactions. Class experiments will be on display in the library for other students to visit. Members of the Tech Team will be supporting other students with the use of some high tech gadgetry such as Makey MaKey, RaspberryPi and micro:bits. Students from 5FD will use Arduino to set up a heat sensor. Thanks to students from 4/5AW who are conducting one-to-one coding lessons in the computer laboratory with younger students during Science Week and to members of the App Inventors group who have volunteered to teach other senior students the basics of using App Inventor 2.

The theme for NRW2017 is ‘Let's Take the Next Steps'.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) runs annually from 27 May – 3 June. These dates mark two milestones in Australia's reconciliation journey: The 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision, respectively. In 2017, we reflect on two significant anniversaries in Australia's reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 referendum, and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision. As we commemorate these significant milestones, we ask all Australians to be a part of the next big steps in our nation's reconciliation journey.

All Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two students have a Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) title read to them during library classes each week. These titles have been included in your child's PRC reading record online. In order to complete the challenge, K-2 students need to have completed 30 titles from the PRC K-2 list by August.

Some K-2 titles included on the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge list are in our library collection. They have been marked with a pink star, the PRC ID number is also written under the school barcode on the endpapers of the book.

Year 3 and Year 4 students have books marked with a yellow star while the green stars signify Year 5 and Year 6 level titles. Students in these grades need only read 20 titles to complete the PRC, of which only two can be from the same series.

Reading Challenge information can be found online at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Tuesday 20th September the Summer Hill Intermediate Choir sang us proud at the Sydney Town hall Primary Proms Daintree concert. Their voices joined nearly 500 other students from across Sydney to sing a challenging repertoire from all compass points of the globe. I was met by a very excited and slightly weary choir at the end of the night demanding to know my favourites. This is a hard task: Monster and Deep in the Meadow from The Hunger Games were certainly delightful but the whole evening was a true pleasure. Congratulations to the students for a beautiful performance and for attracting praise from staff on the night for their commendable behaviour. Thank you to Ms Sarah Philips and Ms Jemma Tabet for the hard yards before and during the very long day.

Walk Safely to School Day - Friday 20 May

All primary school aged children around Australia are invited to participate in National Walk

Safely to School Day 2016.

Walk Safely to School Day initiative will be celebrated on Friday 20 Day 2016. This year, the Walk Safely to School Day App* is available to download and will allow children, parents and carers to track their kilometres to and from school, time spent walking and their average walking speed. Walk Safely to School Day aims to encourage each Australian child to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle by including a walk at the beginning and end of each day to achieve at least 60 minutes of daily exercise to help prevent obesity and other health problems. The event also promotes reduced car-dependency, greater use of public transport, cleaner air, improved diets and road safety to primary school children throughout Australia.

Operation Art 2016

Summer Hill Public School has been invited to participate in Operation Art which is an initiative of the Children's Hospital at Westmead and the NSW Department of Education and Communities. This program provides a forum for schools and students to display their visual arts achievements through exhibitions at the Armory Gallery Sydney Olympic Park and the Art Gallery of NSW.

In previous years paintings by some of our students were chosen to be in an exhibition that toured regional galleries across NSW.

Eventually they were displayed in hospitals to help brighten up the wards.

Paintings by other Summer Hill students are also on display in hospitals in NSW.

Copies of paintings by Erica and Alice from Year 6 and Zoe in Year 2 are hanging on the walls in the school office area.

Each participating school may submit up to four pieces of work by any student from kindergarten to year 6. All the pieces submitted by our students will be judged by a totally independent art expert from The Royal Art Society of NSW who will decide on the four pieces which will represent our school. The theme of the work must be something cheerful and uplifting that is appropriate for display in a hospital.

The piece of work can range in size from a minimum A4 ( 30 x 21cm) to a maximum A2 ( 42 x 60 cm) and a maximum depth of 5 mm.

Paintings do not need to be framed. Winning entries will be professionally framed and exhibited at the Armory Gallery in Olympic Park.

The closing date for submissions is Wednesday, 27th April, 2016.

All art work is to be given to Mrs Bell by this date. No late entries will be accepted.

2016 NSW Premier's Reading Challenge

The 2016 NSW Premier's Reading Challenge has officially begun! Students in K - 6 are encouraged to participate in this fun and motivating challenge that encourages students to read some of the wonderful books we have here in our SHPS Library.

All of the details for the 2016 PRC can be found on the website – https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

To login, students will need their DET username and the password they use to access the Kidspace Portal. Classroom teachers or the Teacher Librarians can help provide this information.

Once read, each PRC title should be recorded into the student's reading record online at: www.schools.nsw.edu.au/premiersreadingchallenge

Each title has a unique NSW Premier's Reading Challenge identification number, these have been written under the barcode of each of the labelled titles in our collection to make it easier for families to enter the data into each student's online reading record.

PRC Titles in the K - 2 category (marked with a Pink Star) are located separately in the school library for ease of selection. Students in Years 3 - 4 and Years 5 - 6 independently select books from the library shelves. Y3-4 titles are marked with a Yellow Star. Y5-6 titles are marked with a Green Star.

All 19 titles read aloud to Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two students during library lessons in Terms One and Two have automatically been added to K, Y1 or Y2 students' PRC records online. This means that K-2 students need only read or enjoy listening to 11 more titles to complete the 30 titles required by the challenge.

Students in Y3-6 need to independently read 20 titles to complete the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge. The PRC closes in August so there is still plenty of time to enjoy reading through the great selection of titles on the PRC Reading Lists.

TRAFFIC CHANGES TO KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE

Traffic changes to keep our kids safe

Changes to parking and traffic flow around the school will be implemented by Ashfield Council over the Easter school holiday break, and come into effect on or near the first day back of Term 2, on 21 April 2015.

	What's changing?

	1. New part-time children's crossing on Moonbie Street

This will be a teacher supervised flagged crossing (not a zebra crossing) near the front gate operating Monday to Friday from 8.45am to 9.15am and 3.00pm to 3.30pm.

	2. New Moonbie Street drop-off/pick-up area – for K to 3 only
The current NO PARKING zone along Moonbie Street will be extended to create a new Kindergarten to Year 3 only drop-off and pick-up area, operating Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4.00pm.

	3. New Junction Road drop-off/pick-up area – for Years 4 to 6 only

A new NO PARKING zone will be installed along Junction Road to create a Year 4 to Year 6 drop-off and pick-up area, operating Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4.00pm.
(Where children in a family span across both drop-off/pick-up areas, the area for the youngest child should be used.)

	4. Changes to school perimeter parking

There will be new parking constraints on Moonbie Street and Junction Road from 8.00am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4.00pm Monday to Friday, as well as a new NO PARKING zone near the back gate on Herbert Street for the delivery of equipment and large instruments.

5. Double lines at intersection of Moonbie and Herbert Streets

New double lines will make it illegal to make a u-turn or overtake at the intersection of Moonbie and Herbert Streets.

	How will the changes help?

Provide a safe crossing for children walking from the Old Canterbury Road/Dulwich Hill side of the school across Moonbie and Herbert Streets.

The new drop-off and pick-up areas split across two sites will help ease traffic congestion at the Moonbie Street gate which has been a substantial problem for some time.

Prevent dangerous and illegal practices, such as u-turns and overtaking at key road intersections.

Traffic flow will be improved as vehicles will be required to circulate through the drop-off and pick-up areas quickly - waiting or parking for more than 2 minutes in a NO PARKING zone is illegal.

It is now possible for parents to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. The payment page is accessed through the school's website by selecting the Make Online Payments link above.

Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sport and creative and practical arts activities. There is also a category of Other to cover the school's instrumental music program.

When you access Make Online Payments you must enter:

the student's name and class, and a reference number, OR

the student's name and date of birth.

These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system. There is also the option to enter the Student Registration Number, but this number will not be required for payments made to Summer Hill Public School.

This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner. These details are not passed back to the school.

You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and/or printed.

Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child's account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page, a further receipt will not be issued by the school.

For any enquiries regarding the Online Payment process please contact the School Administration Office.

What fun (and what a learning experience.....real learning). The stalls on display were magnificent and a tribute to the hard work put in by Year 6. Congratulations boys and girls.

On the 18th of October 2012, 30 countries battled it out in the annual Year 6 Olympic Games. All of the various countries did a lap around the arena, roaring out their national anthems proudly around the garden of the Darrell Jackson Gardens. First up was the balloon race, then the egg and spoon race, then the three legged race, hula hoop race and finally the good old sack race. Everyone had a great time.

ROYAL EASTER SHOW GARDENING PRESENTATION

	OUR GARDEN

By Summer Hill Public School (3IS)

During the term students have worked with teachers and parent helpers to grow and nurture a community garden. Below is an account of their experiences (taken from extracts of a class garden diary) and how they achieved this.

In the garden we put all the weeds in the green bins. We use the green bins also for dead plants. In the garden we used the rainwater from the water tank. We used it to water the plants with the watering cans. When the rain falls on the roofs of our school buildings the water goes into gutters then into down pipes and then into the tanks.

When we started gardening we used worm juice on our garden. We use worm juice to make plants grow. We mix worm juice with water. We used the worm juice for the garden for the Easter Show. We had fun with it!

Picture this beautiful Spring afternoon and an entire school playground filled with very excited, LOUD children with their
silver coins.
It was such a happy event with the children and their ‘Buddy' classes competing for the longest line of silver coins. It was
an extremely positive afternoon for all of the children especially the ‘little' ones.
The only problem that arose from the day was, would you believe this collection of TOO MUCH money! What a
wonderful position to be in.
A HUGE thank you to all of the office staff and teachers who literally spent hours counting the mass of silver coins.
Congratulations yet again to all of our school community for the commitment of our school to helping so many needy
organisations across the globe.
Ms Bosler
Learning About The GreenWay

This article was taken from The Inner West Courier.

Students Learn GreenWay

SOME lucky students have swapped the classroom for the great outdoors as part of a new education program being trialled at inner west public schools. The GreenWay Primary School Program pilot was launched last year at Summer Hill Public School, Ashbury Public School and Kegworth Public School in Leichhardt.

Working in tandem to the current curriculum, it encourages children to learn about local urban biodiversity while traipsing through the Greenway corridor for a few hours each week. Classes are planned around a series of walks including one from Summer Hill to the Iron Cove bridge and another from Dulwich Hill to the Cooks River. During the walks, students collect bugs, identify local animals and listen to stories about historical events.

Summer Hill Public School teacher Adam Williams said ditching the tables and chairs for wide open spaces made learning "real".

"It's local and the kids love learning about history and the environment this way," Mr Williams said.

"Just recently I showed students a 200-year-old archway that used to be named Battle Bridge. We talked about convict uprisings and bushrangers," Mr Williams said.

The pilot project is due to be completed next month and will be reviewed by teachers, parents and the Department of Education. With sustainability set to become a core part of the new primary school curriculum, GreenWay Sustainability Project officer Joanne McDonnell hopes the program will become a core subject for all inner-west schools.

"Instead of getting kids on a bus to the Ku-ring-gai National Park, they can step outside and learn about these things in their area," Ms McDonnell said.

To learn more, go to greenway.org.au.

URBAN GREEN CORRIDOR

The Cooks River to Iron Cove Greenway is an urban green corridor following the route of the Rozelle to Dulwich Hill freight rail corridor which is being converted to a light rail track

The path connects the Cooks River and Iron Cove Bay

The area is home to reptiles, birds, flying foxes, bats, possums, frogs and even endangered long-nosed bandicoots

What they learn

Local indigenous and post settlement history

Sustainable living

Transport

Urban water systems

The students of 5AW were asked to DESIGN and MAKE a bridge made entirely from drinking straws and masking tape. They had to work in small groups to finalise a design that would span at least 30cm and hold a weight of at least 1 kg. Then there bridges had to experience a cyclone! (Jim with his trusty leaf blower.) Needless to say we had some fantastic discussions and made some interesting discoveries.

Congratulations to Lilli H. who will represent New South Wales Primary Schools Sports Association (NSWPSSA) at the National Swimming Championships in Melbourne at the end of July. Lilli made the finals of the Freestyle, Backstroke and Butterfly at the State Titles. In the final of the freestyle Lilli won the silver medal with a personal best time.

We would like to wish Lilli all the best at the National Titles. The cost of representing NSWPSSA is substantial. If you would like to assist Lilli and have the opportunity to win some very worthwhile prizes then please purchase a ticket in the NSWPSSA 2011 State Team Guessing Competition. The tickets are only two dollars and are available at the school office. Prizes include a laptop notebook computer, LCD television and iPod shuffles. You will have to be quick as tickets need to be returned the first week back next term. Any support offered would be greatly appreciated.

Our Solar Panels Go Live!

The solar panels on our new classrooms can now be monitored via the internet.

Our school has two sets of solar panels. One array is found on the roof of the infant's block and the other is located on our new classrooms on Junction Road.

They help keep our power bills down. For example, the set on the new building produces enough energy, on the average day, to power our whole school for approximately an hour. Obviously this is not a complete solution but it is a step in the right direction.

The new technology that comes with the German-made solar panels means that students can monitor how much energy the panels produce. Students can monitor the panels from here as well as learn more about how solar energy works.
Over the past weeks our new playground and our school vegetable gardens have been looked after by a group of wonderful parents. As the photos show, they have done a great job! (They have also had a bit of a helping hand from the unusual amount of summer rain we have been experiencing.)

The sunflowers planted by Year 5 to show support for the Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi have also come into bloom and look fantastic.

Thank you to all the parents who helped out!

Our two school captains got their hands dirty today when they took part in the GreenWay Festival. James and Alice did a great job representing our school at the the festival. Along with representatives from several other local primary schools, they took part in a variety of environmental activities including an invertabrate survey, a biodiversity study and tree planting.

The GreenWay Festival continues all this week and wraps up at the Summer Hill Food Festival this Sunday (17/10). More information about the festival can be found at www.greenway.org.au .

More photos of our wonderful students taking part in today's activities can be found in our Photo Album section.

Year 1 and 2 Dance Performance!

The Year 1 and Year 2 dance performance held in our school last Wednesday evening was a great success. The students enjoyed themselves as the lessons they have completed this year culminated with an "Around the Globe" theme with each of the classes representing countries and cultures around the world with a Summer Hill perspective.

Renee Adele, our dance teacher, has really inspired the development of the dance culture at Summer Hill. It was
wonderful to see so many parents attending to support our children.

24/8/10
Our Intermediate Choir (Year 3 & 4 students) and our Recorder Group led respectively by Mrs Bale and Ms Ross performed beautifully at Ashfield Mall on Tuesday this week. There was an appreciative audience on hand that included a large number of parents from Summer Hill.
Well done to everyone involved and thank you to Mr Adcock and Ms Benson who assisted on the day.

The Great EGGS-periment!
On July 5, 5AW and 5/6KB got together to conduct a science experiment. The experiment was to make a contraption that would
stop an egg cracking when it was dropped from two storeys!

We gathered and formed groups. Mr Williams and Mr Kay auctioned supplies and materials. We only had $200 to spend. That
was the hardest part.

After lunch we had to make our contraptions using only the things that we had bought. Nothing else was allowed. We only had 25
minutes to make our contraption.

We tested an egg with no contraption or padding and it smashed everywhere! Then we all tested our contraptions, dropping them of
the library. Out of 11 eggs that were dropped, seven survived. It was eggstraordinary!!!

"It was awesome" said Zanzi.

Written by Mia and Isaac.

Mr Williams and Mr Kay said that it was "an eggscellent day as the children worked tirelessly in their groups to try to achieve the
impossible. Well done kids. You learned much today about gravity, force and acceleration as well as how to work as a group."

5/6KB TO ‘CHANGE THE WORLD’!

Did you know that every year, two million trees are cut down to make the junk mail we get through our doors in Australia? By
putting a "No Junk Mail" sign on your letter box you can cut junk mail by around 90%. Class 5/6KB are determined to ‘Change The World'!

Our first task is to make as many ‘No Junk Mail' signs as possible, then give them to families all over Summer Hill. I call this ‘Operation Junk Mail'. The objective of Operation Junk Mail is to decrease the junk mail delivered to our doors. A better alternative to this would be emailed junk mail. It is not a new idea, but it is a simple and effective one. We hope we can achieve the goal we have set out, to ‘Change The World'!

Every family will receive a ‘No Junk Mail' sign in just a few weeks.

Shanice (5/6KB)

Congratulations to Georgia, Sunny and Francesca who travelled to Melbourne in the school holidays to receive their prize for winning the ThinkQuest Australia 2009 competition. ThinkQuest is a competition that challenges teams of students to engage in a topic of their choice, research information and present the results as a website resource for other students to access.
The three Year 5 girls were declared the Australian winners of the 12 and under division for their website based on Friendship. They had to give a short presentation at the ThinkQuest Australia awards ceremony held at the Melbourne Convention Centre and were outstanding representatives of Summer Hill Public School. Again, congratulations to Georgia, Sunny and Francesca and also a huge thank you to their support staff (parents, brothers, sisters and grandmother).
Their website can be found at: http://inhousemktg.com/friends/index.html
