Our highlights
Creative and performing arts
We have comprehensive creative arts programs taught by specialist teachers. Students are engaged in quality explicit lessons following the creative arts syllabus. There are also multiple authentic learning and performance opportunities for students within and beyond the school across a large variety of instrumental, choral, dance and drama ensembles.
Debating and public speaking
Public speaking opportunities are offered across all classrooms Kindy through Year 6, building to participate in regional competitions.
Debating skills are taught as part of the English curriculum and extracurricular competitive opportunities are offered to students with potential in this area.
Chess
Chess is available to students as a recreational activity through a chess club run each week by the captains, and as a competitive activity in inter-school competitions. Coaching (for a fee) is available before school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Competitive chess occurs after school Friday afternoons during Terms 2 and 3. Parents provide transport to the various venues.
School and Interschool Sport
Summer Hill Public School offers pathways for high potential and gifted students through weekly skill development and competitions in a wide variety of individual and team sporting disciplines.
School Carnivals
Students in Years 2 - 6 participate in all of the following carnivals which is a talent development pathway from school, zone, regional, state to national level.
- Athletics
- Cross Country
- Swimming
Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA)
The PSSA organises primary school sport at the zone, regional, state and national levels. Summer Hill Public School participates in PSSA carnivals for individual sport and team sports. Many of our students progress to regional and state competitions.
Environmental Education
Environmental education is integrated into all areas of school life. Students are encouraged to think and act in ways that are environmentally responsible. Conservation, sustainability and efficient use of resources are a priority at the school. Summer Hill Public School's environmental program is directly supported by the Grounds Committee, a P&C sub-committee, which organises projects to improve the school grounds.
